It is number 6 in my ‘Turning Squares’ series.

I entered this piece in the Irish Woodturners Guild (IWG)’Turning Turns 40′(TT40) competition at the IWG symposium in October 2023.

Each competition entrant was given a 15cm x 15cm x 15cm cube of Irish Ash to help highlight the ash dieback disease that is killing off Ash trees in Ireland and many other countries and also to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the IWG..

The guideline for the competition was that a piece had to be made from the Ash cube. Materials other than wood, additional wood, that was appropriate in the opinion of the judges and used in a subsidiary manner could be used and the finished piece must be at least 75% Ash.

Only 40 pieces would be selected for a TT40 exhibition. This piece was selected as one of the 40.

All 40 pieces will be on tour at curated exhibitions around Ireland, in the UK and at the American Association of Woodturners symposium in 2025 (AAW).
