Description

This piece is double sided and interactive in that the tree is painted with gold paint on one side and is natural mahogany on the other and it can be swiveled on the base to view the other side.

I saw an artistic tree made of metal while on a Danube cruise earlier this year and thought it would a nice piece to make in wood. The original artist was not named. This is my interpretation of the original piece.

I made the tree and it’s trunk from recycled mahogany that was a stair tread in a now demolished school.
I made the curved trunk from two offcuts from a yew board. The joined edges were jagged so I used black epoxy resin to bond it and to fill the gaps.
I made the base from a walnut offcut.
The tree is 19.5cm in diameter and 0.5cm at it’s centre and 0.35cm at it’s edge. I cut the outer edge shapes on my scroll saw and pierced the interior with a rotary cutter.
Tools used for shaping and piercing: Scroll saw, Foredom rotary tool, Dremel, Die grinder.
Coloured with AMI Antik Metallic gold paint.
Finish: Acrylic sanding sealer and Acrylic satin lacquer.
