Description
Carved, burned, rotary wire brushed, textured.
Coloured with ebonising lacquer, acrylic metal paint, verdigris wax, Chroma gilt, satin lacquer.
I made this piece under the tutelage of Nick Agar in his Devon workshop while on a one to one two day course with him
where he upskilled me in texturing, colouring and burning. He demonstrated all of these skills on this piece on the second day
which happened to be my birthday. I could not have had a better gift.
This piece is not turned and yet it has inspired me more than any other piece I have made to date.
Nick handed me this piece of oak and a blank sheet of paper and following some questioning about things that inspired me (Irish megalithic history, the sea and rivers) he got me to start sketching.
This piece is the end result and designing it was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do but Nick persisted and encouraged me.
All of the pieces in my ‘Turning Squares’ series have developed from this piece with the three sections on the right being the inspiration.
